Modern Cat Photo Contest Entry- Emily

Emily was adopted from the Fredericton SPCA, through the satellite adoption program at the Douglas Animal Hospital. She and her little orange brother had been waiting there for a while, as they were special needs kitties and staff were hoping to adopt them out together. Both kitties had a condition called cerebellar hypoplasia, or "tumblers", which is caused by the mother cat contracting distemper while pregnant.
Eventually, it was decided that Emily and her brother would be adopted out separately. Though he found his forever home relatively quickly, she was at the vet for a long while. We already had three cats and didn't think we could handle more. After a while though, we found ourselves making up reasons to stop by the clinic so we could see how she was. At some point the staff talked us into taking her home for a "trial" adoption and the rest, as they say, is history.
The major effect Emily's condition is that she has very poor balance. She is a bit wobbly when she walks, can't jump too well, and sometimes falls off things. Originally, the shelter staff had named her "Domino" because she's black and white and often falls over - lol. Otherwise though, she is perfectly healthy and happy and has a normal life expectancy. People are often reluctant to adopt tumblers kitties, but they shouldn't be. Emily has the most delightful personality of any cat we have ever had, and her disability only makes her more endearing. If you ever have an opportunity to adopt a cat like her, you definitely should.
