Mordecai, a young black cat, spends his days with many other friendly felines at the Best Friends Pet Adoption & Spay/Neuter Center in Mission Hills. As a resident of the free roam cat room, Mordecai comes across dozens of potential adopters every week, but has yet to find a forever home of his own.

Thanks to 9 Lives for $9 promotion from Best Friends Animal Society, a spotlight is being shined on cats like Mordecai. Throughout the month of June, the promotion offers $9 adoptions for all cats at Best Friends Pet Adoption & Spay/Neuter Center and the NKLA Pet Adoption Center in West Los Angeles.

“We have cats of every size, age, breed and personality at our centers, including lots of kittens,” said Marc Peralta, executive director of Best Friends Animal Society – Los Angeles. “As part of this adoption promotion, Best Friends has created an awesome video highlighting nine reasons to adopt cats or kittens.”

Studies show that health benefits of having a cat include lowered blood pressure and risk of heart attack, boosting of the immunity system, and stress relief, which are illustrated in the video.

“Cats can provide a daily dose of laughter with their funny antics. Having a cat snuggle up to you can also make your problems melt away, at least for a little while,” Peralta said.
All cats at the Best Friends or NKLA Pet Adoption Centers are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped and ready to go home. Both centers are open daily from noon to 8 p.m. and are conveniently located within a mile of major Los Angeles highways.

“We encourage everyone to come to our centers this June to find their feline best friend. Our adoption specialists are excited and ready to help you make the perfect match,” Peralta said.

Mr. Teacup, a large eight year old white cat with brown markings at the Best Friends Pet Adoption Center, is an affable fellow who enjoys watching the world go by from a cat tree and napping (preferably on a lap).

“Cats make fantastic, low-maintenance pets for busy families, seniors, and apartment dwellers or just about anyone seeking love and companionship,” Peralta said.
Best Friends Animal Society is the only national animal welfare organization focused exclusively on ending the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters. According to Peralta, adoption is crucial to bringing about No Kill Los Angeles (NKLA), Best Friends’ initiative to make L.A. the nation’s largest no-kill city by 2017.

“The sad truth is that 9,000 dogs and cats are killed in U.S. shelters every day. We need everyone who’s in the market for a new cat to adopt and help us Save Them All,” Peralta said.

“My Cat from Hell” star, author and cat expert Jackson Galaxy, who is also a celebrity ambassador for Best Friends Animal Society, is excited about the promotion.

“It’s a wonderful time to add some love to your life and save a cat’s life at the same time,” Galaxy said. “We all have a part to play if we want to Save Them All. 9 Lives for $9 makes it easy.”
